TODAY is the deadline to register for Baubles and Beads Quilt Class & our Floral Arranging Class!
Have you always wanted to quilt? Or, do you need a brush-up on your skills? Then our Baubles and Beads quilting class is for you! This Basic Quilting class will teach participants how to cut fabric and measure fabric, learn how to work the sewing machines, create your quilt blocks, and assemble and finish the quilt! Baubles and Beads is a four-session class at $20 per session, and we will meet from 5 – 8 p.m. on the following dates: 12 January, 9 February, 9 March, and 6 April. Learn how to arrange flowers like the pros at the Arts & Crafts Center’s Floral Arranging class! On Tuesday, January 17 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., learn basic flower arranging skills from an instructor as we complete a special project, “A Bird’s Eye View of Winter.” All supplies are provided by the instructor. Enjoy extended hours at the Auto Body Shop during Moonlight Mechanic!
Fit some auto work into your busy schedule during Moonlight Mechanic! The Auto Shop will extend their hours to 11:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. on 21 Jan so you have time to get that car work done! Stop by and utilize our equipment, including hydraulic lifts and flat stalls, a wheel alignment machine, tire changer, wheel balancer, brake lathe, fully equipped tool boxes for each stall, a paint booth and many of the specialty tools needed for your auto repairs. Mandatory certification is required to use some equipment. The Auto Shop staff is available to certify and advise customers. Learn how to assemble your own fruit bouquet during our Edible Arrangements class!
Do you love edible bouquets, but hate paying their hefty price tags? Learn how to create one yourself at our Edible Arrangement class, Saturday, 4 February from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.! Students will learn how to cut and assemble fruit in order to create fun, beautiful, and absolutely tasty fruit bouquets! The cost of the class is $25 per person, and the instructor will provide all supplies. No previous experience is needed, but you must be at least 10 years old to take the class. Please register no later than Wednesday, 1 February by calling the Arts & Crafts Center at 759-4084.
Make matching aprons with your daughter (and even one for her doll!) during February’s Simply Sewing!
You AND your child can learn to sew at the Arts & Crafts Center’s Simply Sewing! On Saturday, 11 February from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., children ages 10 and over can join a parent in making matching parent/child aprons while learning the basics of sewing techniques and how to use a sewing machine with a skilled instructor. The cost of the class is $30 per parent/child couple, and a supply list will be provided at signup. There will be a limited number of sewing machines to use at the Arts & Crafts Center, or you can bring your own. Time allowing, parents and children are also welcome to make a matching doll apron with leftover fabric. Please sign up by Wednesday, 8 February by calling the Arts & Crafts Center at 759-4084.

THE BFG is coming to Movie Night Madness!
Grab your frobscottle and head down to the Base Theater for Movie Night Madness, Friday, 13 January at 7 p.m.! Next month’s movie is The BFG. The BFG, which stands for “Big Friendly Giant,” is based off of Roald Dahl’s book of the same name and tells the story of an orphan girl named Sophie who meets the world’s one friendly giant, the BFG. The BFG, who catches good dreams and blows them into children’s rooms while they are sleeping, teams up with Sophie to capture all of the other giants before they can hurt people. Adult Coloring in the Breakaway Room
There is no problem in life that can’t be improved with a fresh box of crayons and a coloring sheet! De-stress while creating a beautiful masterpiece during our Adult Coloring sessions, every Wednesday in January at 11 a.m. in the Dole Center Breakaway Room. Paddle up and join us on Friday, 20 Jan. for Quartermania, our exciting live-action bidding event! Purchase your numbered paddles for $2 each or 3 for $5 at the door of the Dole Center Ballroom starting at 6 p.m. (the more paddles you have, the more chances you have to win)! When the game starts at 7 p.m., explore the room of prizes and decide which ones you want to bid on. Each prize you choose requires a bid match of 1-4 quarters. Once all bids are placed, a number is randomly-chosen for each prize. If the randomly-chosen number matches your paddle number AND you bid on the prize, YOU WIN IT! Vendors include home décor, makeup, jewelry, gift cards and more. Interested in being a vendor? Vendor registration is $15 for a 6 ft. table and two chairs (additional tables are $5 each) and must be submitted at least five days prior to the event. MLK Essay Contest– Now Accepting Entries
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said:
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Take the first step and honor one of the most influential people in American history by entering the Youth Center’s MLK Essay Challenge. From now through 31 January, students ages 9 – 18 are asked to write an essay on the topic, “What do you think Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy meant to Americans?” Essay must be 1,000 words and typed in 12 pt., Times New Roman font. A panel of judges will read essay submissions, and the winning essay writer will receive a gift certificate. Essays MUST be turned in to the Youth Center by Tuesday, 31 January. The FINAL Deadline to Purchase Wichita Sports Forum tickets is 12 January!!
HIGH FLYING FUN IS COMING YOUR WAY! Team McConnell will have Wichita Sports Forum all to ourselves for a SPECIAL overnight lock-in! On Friday, 13 January at 10:30 p.m., Wichita Sports Forum will close down to the general public and open ONLY to Team McConnell (that means EVERYONE– active duty, retirees, DOD civilian, Reserves, Guard and their families!). Join us for an amazing night of trampoline jumping, basketball, sand and court volleyball and soccer! Plus, fight for your squadron pride, or simply have fun with a group of friends, by entering one of several sports tournaments that we will offer throughout the night. The cost is $10 per person for ages 4 and up, and your admission includes a $7 food voucher, free! Please note that children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and children ages 6 and under must be monitored by an adult at all times. Become King or Queen of the Court at the Youth Center’s 3 vs. 3 Teen Basketball Tourney!
Eat, sleep, hoop, repeat, and become legendary in the 3 vs. 3 Teen Basketball Tournament, Friday, 20 Jan.! Teens ages 13 – 18 can dribble to glory at the Youth Center from 6 – 10 p.m.. During this elimination tournament, the games are 15 minutes each OR whoever scores 15 points first. The cost is $15 per team, and bottled water will be provided. Test your strength at the Strong Man Competition!
Hey, mighty men and women of McConnell! Test your strength at the Fitness Center’s Strong Man Competition! On Friday, 13 January from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., join us in the weight room where participants will attempt three lifts: bench, squat and deadlift. For each lift, the participant will be given three attempts. The highest weight of the three attempts will count as the participant’s score in that lift, and the winner will be determined by adding together the totals for each of the three lifts to find the highest combined score. There will be a male and female category.
NEW Functional Fitness Class at the Fitness Center!
Do you want to build strength and endurance? Try out the Fitness Center’s NEW Functional Fitness class! Workouts will feature anaerobic, aerobic, high intensity interval training and circuit training into your routine, helping you reach peak performance, improve the way you look, and decrease the chance of injuries. This class is free and takes place every Monday from 5 – 6 p.m. in the Fitness Center’s MMA Room. For more information, call the Fitness Center at (316) 759-4010.

Story Time at the Library
Story time at the Library continues on Tuesday, 17 January with “Peace” week! We’ll read books about Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., and then we’ll make some friendly little snakes to pet and love! Family Child Care Providers Needed!
The Family Child Care (FCC) Program has openings for Family Child Care Providers who are willing to provide regular full time, part time or hourly child care and child care for special needs children.
Expanded Child Care Programs such a Home Community Care, Deployment Care, and the Air Force Aid PCS program are additional opportunities available for FCC providers. If you are an Active Duty Spouse or a retired military spouse and want to learn more about the business of child care in your home, contact the Family Child Care Office at 759-4222 or come to the office that is located in the Child Development Center.
