Nine things you should know about the Bring A Friend Job Fair

By Staff Sgt. Lauren Penney, 184th Public Affairs

I sat down with Master Sgt. Jessica Sills, supervisor of the 184th Recruiting Office, to get answers to the most common questions about the Bring A Friend Job Fair happening at McConnell Air Force Base on Apr. 8. Here’s what she said.

  1. What will be happening?

It’s an event hosted by the 184th Intelligence Wing to bring a friend, family member, associate or anyone who might be interested in joining the Air National Guard. They can get an idea of what we do and what they would be doing, what jobs are available and what benefits would be offered to them.

Booths from every section will be displayed, so everyone can see who does what. There will also be a tour of the intelligence complex for those interested, but additional information from both the military sponsor and the friend will be needed to clear them for secured locations.

  1. What info is needed for the Intel tour?

Name, address, birthdate, social security number, driver’s license, all of which is just so a background check can be completed to make sure everyone is good to go into secure locations. The information is due by Apr. 2.

  1. Do I have to register as the friend (military sponsor)?

Yes, if you don’t already have clearance for the intel complex, and have a friend who may be interested in an intelligence position, please RSVP as we’d like to call and ask you for that little bit of information to make sure you both get on the tour. Or call us!

  1. Can my friend bring their parents?

Yes! The potential recruits are encouraged to bring their parents. We would just need the same information as above if they want to participate in the tour.

  1. Can I be a friend if someone comes and doesn’t have a sponsor?

Yes, if someone comes without a sponsor, we’d like volunteers on standby to show them around. If interested, contact the Recruiter’s Office.

  1. Can retired Fighting Jayhawks bring someone who is interested?

Absolutely! Anyone that can get on base and has someone who might be interested would be most welcome. We just need them to call us or send an e-mail to RSVP.

  1. I heard a rumor about prizes. Is there any truth to that?

Well, I’m glad you asked! Friends who come to the event will receive a raffle ticket and at the end of the fair, which will conclude with retreat and a flag folding ceremony at 4 p.m., winners will be announced. They have a chance to win one of two Echo Dots. They must be present to win.

Military sponsors that bring a friend (or friends) will receive one raffle ticket per friend that they bring for the chance to win a Nintendo Switch. Also, there will be a booth competition for the jazziest display. Kudos is the prize for that one.

  1. If I bring a friend, does that mean they have to join the Air National Guard?

There’s no obligation for someone to join if they come to the event! It’s just for them to see and get an idea of everything we do, so they know that we’re here if they ever want to join.

  1. How do I RSVP?

Registering is simple. Just send an e-mail with your name and phone number to Nothing fancy, just let us know you’re interested in the Bring A Friend Job Fair. We’ll call you back to get the information we need. Of course, you can always call us at 316-759-7424 for more information.

We hope to see you there!
